This week we had a guest speaker talk about Sherwin-Williams paint with us and talk to us about paint.


Something that I did not know before was that paint has 3 different purposes: it protects against things like weather, stains, and rot. Paint also is used for aesthetic reasons, and it also can do things that I had no idea about before, like air purifying and sanitizing self-cleaning.


We also learned how, while not always necessary, using a primer before painting is a good idea; it can help the paint stick to the wall and make it last longer. Like paint, there are lots of different types of primer, and you have to make sure that you use the right type for your project.

There are 5 different types of binders in paint that we talked about. alkyd, latex, acrylic, epoxy, and urethane. 

  • Alkyd is an oil-based paint; it has a smooth finish and is normally used in interiors. 
  • Latex is a water-based paint and is used in interiors, but you shouldn't use it in extreme environments.
  • acrylic, which can be used in both exterior and interior and dries very fast
  • epoxy, which is very durable and can be used in high-traffic areas 
  • Urethane is used for exteriors; it is very durable and doesn't yellow.

All of these types of paints can also be hybrid, meaning that they have 2 of these types of paints in them.

we also talked about Gloss and Sheen, which means how shiny a paint is. a low sheen will hide any imperfections very well high one will show everything

I thought that this week was very interesting. I had no idea how many different types of paint there are and how there is a specific type of paint that would be best in specific situations.

    Hey Moriah! I loved how you mentioned primer-- this was something I knew of, but didn't realize the importance of until our guest talked about its significance when painting. I also loved the image you included of the different types of paint levels!

This week we learned about emphasis, proportion, scale, and rhythm, which are all important when designing a space.  emphasis   Emphasis is very important; it can be used to create a focal point or a point of interest in a room, which is important to create a good space. room with a clear focal point proportion and scale  Proportion and scale have to do with the size of things. For example, you don't want a tiny table with giant chairs; it wouldn't work. Proportion and scale help make sure that things are the right size. It can also change the size of other things in the room; the chairs being super big would make everything else in the room feel smaller. room out of scale rhythm   Rhythm can be achieved through repetition and is an important element of design. Primary Elements

week 1  this week we learned about the Primary Elements. which are point, line, plane and volume  point A point has no detention, no height, and no depth. It marks a position in space, a few places where you would see a point is at the end of a line, when 2 lines meet, or in the center of an object. because of those things, even though a point a point doesn't have any direction we can still see them with the context of other objects.  line A line is kinda like a point, but is has length 2 points can make a line, but a line cant become a point. A line can be formed with a solid connection between objects or with repeating objects. A line can be used to connect different elements or to show movement or the edge of an object.
